I’ve read all the entries, drunk all the tea, and tallied up all my notes. And there’s finally a winner for the latest short story contest, Hermes the Babbler!

The theme was about how all of humanity was in harmony and spoke the same language . . . until Hermes (who’s the Trickster, you know) played a little game and caused everyone to speak different tongues. After that, nobody could communicate easily anymore, and miscommunication ensued, followed by conflict, followed by war.

Mileva Anastasiadou’s story “A Midsummer Night’s Nightmare” won the prize! Mileva’s story is a dystopic, futuristic parody of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Like the play, her story explores the theme of order and chaos (among other ideas). She got so creative, taking into the heads of the characters so thoroughly that it sometimes felt like I was reading multiple stories at once—right in line with Hermes making everyone speak a different language.

Mileva’s story is intelligent, well-conceived, and interesting. It’s a fun read!
